Corvair-95 Options and Accessories

This web page is an attempt to unite (and reconcile where necessary) information from different sources about Corvair-95 factory and dealer installed accessories and options -- sort of a one-stop shopping mart, alas, for products no longer made. The tables provide information about which accessories, options and part numbers were available for different model years.

Source Documents and Abbreviations. (hyperlinks will take you to the documents on other pages):
AI =Accessories Installation manual (e.g., "AI:61" = 1961 Accessories
Installation manual")
AM = Corvair-95 Assembly Manuals

RRM = Radio Repair manuals
TCB = Chevy Taxi-Cab Brochure
TDB = Truck Data Book
"EF"s = Engineering Features booklets, which may be for Chevy Trucks, Passenger Cars (including the 06) and Corvair-95
VIK = GM Heritage Site Vehicle Information Kits (05,44,54 are in 1962-64 Chevy Trucks Kits; 06 is in 1961-65 Corvair Kits)
Other sources are identified where drawn upon below.
Model abbreviations:
05, 06, 44, 54 = Corvan, Greenbrier, Loadside, Rampside

The tables include hyperlinks to original GM illustrations, descriptions, installation instructions and parts lists. 'AI' hyperlinks are to installation instructions for each option part number; CF, etc, are hyperlinks are to illustrations and descriptions. 'P&A' hyperlinks open section(s) that list the option part number(s) for all years. 'PIC's are photographs of the actual part (would like to add more of these).

Thanks to Kent Sullivan for helpful discussions in sorting out some of the options, and Dave Newell for providing some additional documents. If you see any errors or have additional information, they are welcomed by the Corvanatics Webmaster.

Factory Installed Options

This table lists options that were available as factory installations. Prior to 1963, FOA (Factory Optional Accessory) and RPO (Regular Production Option) numbers identified components that were factory installed in place of or in addition to standard equipment (however, sometimes these may also have been dealer installed). Some items were only dealer-installed options. The numbers given are RPO unless indicated otherwise. In 1963 a new Option Identification System was introduced consolidating FOAs as options (TDB:63). In the new system, RPO numbers consisted of a prefix letter corresponding to a general equipment group, and a part identification number between 01 - 100. This system did not apply to paint or Interior Trim Options, which retained a 3 digit code. The general equipment group letter suffixes are as follows:

ABCDE - Body Equipment N - Gasoline tank, Exhaust & Steering Equioment
F - Front Axle & Suspension Equipment PQRS - Wheel & Tire Equipment
GH - Rear Axle & Suspension Equipment T - Sheet Metal, Battery & Lamp Equipoment
J - Brake Equipment U - Speedometer & Misc. Electrical Equipment
KL - Engine Equipment VZ - Radiator, Bumper & Misc. Final Assembly Equipment
M - Clutch a& Transmission Equipment

Concerning the following two items, also see the article by Dave Newell in CorvanAntics 2006 vol34(2) pg 4, the "Stock Is..." article by Larry Claypool in Corsa Communique, April 1989, pg21, and his letter to CorvanAntics 1996, vol24(2) pg 2.
Round Mirrors (210/D32): RPO 210 was initially scheduled for Fall, 1960, but internal GM documents show a manufacturing problem necessitated postponement. When it was finally made available, in February, ’61, the mirror came with an 8” bracket and CIP:61 identifies RPO 210 with an 8" long fixed arm. The mirror head (#3765480) is recognizable by the off-center mounting bracket secured with three standard drive screws. The parts catalogs confusingly state the 8” arms (3773367-8, superceded by 3778719-20) are for the “short mirror”, but this is because an even longer arm bracket was available for other (C10-C30) trucks. Thus, it would seem a factory stock early 1961 FC would not have a mirror, but a later build could have a round mirror with an 8” arm. The production delay apparently was in the manufacture of the 3¾” arm intended for the FC, and its delivery date was delayed into the 1962 production year. Later versions of the ’61 assembly manual show the 3¾“ arm (3795373-4), but a mirror with 8” arm was still being listed in early versions of the ’62 Truck Data Book. The short-arm version of the mirror eventually made it to the assembly lines around January 1962.
West-Coast Jr Mirrors (D29): Compared to the dealer-installed full-size West Coast style mirror (see Dealer-Installed Option Table below), this was a smaller, less accident-prone version. It was less ruggedly constructed, with no diagonal brace. It was available as either a factory-installed RPO D29 or a dealer-installed accessory (see table below). D29 came with a Cameo White bracket and mirror (TEF:63), although, like the bumpers and hub caps, they probably were painted Pure White for FCs with Pure White Exteriors. Kent Sullivan reported finding original 'junior' size mirrors that are black (PIC), although these are likely to be the dealer-installed version.
1963 Cost saving changes: Beginning in 1963 three items were removed as standard equipment from 05 vehicles as cost-saving measures. The rear door windows was eliminated and became RPO A12 option; as a result, the inside rear view mirror became superfluous (and was also removed). In leue of the IRVM, the round ORVM became standard for 05 models; unless the RPO A12 rear window was ordered in which case the ORVM remainned an option (TEF:63). The engine rear grille was eliminated (for 05 & 54 )and was included with Z60 RPO Deluxe equipment for 1964-5 (C95EF:64). (AM:63-65 identifies the rear grille as Z60 equipment for 06 vehicles, but this seems to be erroneous). The glovebox (dispatch) door was eliminated from both 05 and 54 models (TEF:63; the glovebox was similar to the original but with the provisions for the door stop and hinges removed). The door became RPO B78, but 4 days later was reinstated as standard equipment over dealers' complaints.
Windshield washer & wiper: Only in 1961 were the washer (5055204, FOA 130) and 2-speed wiper (4909108, PIC, AM:61, RPO 355) distinct options and the larger, horizontally-mounted wiper motor was used. From 1962 onward, the 2-speed wiper RPOs included the wiper motor (PIC) and washer (AM:62-65). The wiper motor and washer units were the same as for the car, although the electrical and plumbing connections were different. The single speed wiper units were standard items, onto which could be added the dealer-installed washer options listed below.
Special Crankcase Ventilation: this option is present in the Options and Accessories when Installed by Chevrolet document dated 10/1/60, missing in the 9/29/61 version, included again in the 1/2/62 and 3/1/62 editions, and gone for good in 9/4/62 release. Was its absence in the 9/29/61 version intentional or an accident?
102HP option: This engine was available for a brief period in 1963 as described in a Corsa Communique article (2017: 39-9) by Dave Newell. It was offered as a special order COPO (Central Office Production Order).
Rear Axle: In 1961 a 3:27 ratio axle was initially scheduled for the 4-speed transmission, but was replaced with the 3:89 (TEF:62), and from that point the 3:89 gear ratio was the only axle available for FCs through 63. This was replaced with a 3:55 ratio axle in 1964 TEF:64. The positraction option available each year (62-65).
Two options that never made it into production - see CA 20:1-4 (1992):
FAO 136 - air conditioning.
RPO 650 - "Panoramic Cab Back Window", a larger rear window for the pickup; click here for image of prototype.
COPO 2003j: The Central Office Production Order (COPO) 2003j was used to order a Corvan, normally a panel van, with 6 rear windows (roll-down on doors) similar to a Greenbrier. This special order option was sometimes used for conversion vehicles.

Dealer Installed Options and Accessories

This table shows the options (and part numbers) available for different years . The options included were all produced specifically for the Corvair-95 or were identified in at least one document as an FC accessory. Needless to say, there are some discrepancies among the documents concerning some part numbers and years available; these are resolved as best possible, or as noted. Some options were also available as factory installations.

According to the P&A manuals, the correct door jamb switch for 61-65 1206 was 1998748 (PIC), which was superceded post-65 with 4826444 (PIC). Although latter AI manuals show the smaller tube-like door switch 4891633 (PIC) and this was commonly used, P&A manuals state that for FCs this switch only was "used w/ 985574" in 1963, for reasons unknown. NOS switches have "MB" stamped on the head. Might this in any way relate to the absence of 985574 from AI:63? Were the lamp brackets for the FC ever provided with the 'flat' design shown in the AI61-64?

Interestingly, installation instuctions for 1961 and the 62-64 custom features albums placed a switch (1998748) in the left rear door jamb, but 62-65 installation instructions specify, more logically, the jamb of the right rear door (which opens first). The second switch went in the jamb of the front left side intermediate door.

Inside Rear View Mirrors. (Chrome) 987701 is a 10" wide mirror with a flip-type day/night lever. It was probably used principally with Chevy trucks and pickups and made available for the FC in '61 (PS:61). This was phased out in '62 ( it is only listed for the Corvair-95 in CF:62) and replaced with an 8" 985152 mirror, which is listed for the Corvair-95 in PS:62 and 62:FTF, and for all corvairs in the 62 P&A Manual. In '63, 985152 was listed for the Corvair-95 in CF:63 (although shown with a twist-type mechanism) and for all corvairs in 63:FTF. The 985657 8" mirror with a twist day/night mechanism, was introduced in '63, and is listed for Corvair-95 in PS:63. In 64 and 65, 985657 is listed for the Corvair 95 in PS:64, PS:65 and CF:64. The P&A manuals are very weak on IRVMs but generally agree with this. Chevy apparently intended day/night mirrors principally for the pickups, with their larger rear window. Indeed, CF:63 describes 985152 for truck cabs, and CML:64 lists 985657 as "except for Greenbrier".
It is likely that 988173 is the chrome bracket since it is frequently paired with the chrome mirrors in CF:62, & 64 & AI:61.
Outside Chrome "Chevy Bow-tie" mirrors. These were essentially the same chrome mirrors as used on the cars. They were probably intended only for Greenbriers, which were classified a passenger "suburban" vehicle. But the Accessories Installation Manuals identifies them for the Corvair 95, which would include all models.
Outside West Coast Junior mirrors. The 7½" x 10½" mirror was available only as a dealer-installed accessory from 1961 - 64, and was painted gloss black in 1961 and cameo white in later years. The mirror with a different bracket was used with other C10 - C30 trucks (988246). The black and white mirrors were identicle, both had 6 rivets and a pair of mounting brackets on the back side. Beginning in 1963, the 6" x 11" mirror became available as either a dealer or factory installed option (RPO D29). See the Factory-Installed Options Table above for more about the D29 mirrors. Chrome West Coast Junior mirrors were not a GM option but were available from aftermarket sources.

Custom (DeLuxe) Equipment

This table shows which options and accessories were available with RPO 431 and RPO Z60. The 'X's indicate which accessories were included with the DeLuxe trim package each year. A comparison of standard and DeLuxe interior cab features for 1961 was in TEF:61. See above tables for links to resources about the options. If no model number is given, the custom feature was available for all models. Certain interior trim features of Deluxe FCs were encoded in the letters (Exception Control Letters) that were appended to the trim codes found on the cowl plate (e.g., "431N" or "5Z60LA").

Interior Colors, Fabrics, Vinyl Panels
and other Construction Materials

The interior color theme for all Corvair 95s with standard trim was Fawn (Gray in 1961). From 1961 - 65 color-keyed interiors were available for Deluxe Greenbriers, and the available colors were Fawn (Gray in 1961), Turquoise (Blue in 1961), Red and Green. Beginning in 1962, Deluxe Corvans and pickups had two color-keyed interior options, Fawn and red. See FTF:61-64 and CTC, for exterior and interior color combinations and codes. Color-keyed interior side panels were only available for Deluxe Greenbriers and located on the front and side doors (panels were not provided for the rear doors), left side intermediate panel for 6-door models, and rear-quarter panels. Also color-keyed for Greenbriers were the armrest vinyl tops (and bases in 1965), seat vinyl, rubber floor mats¤, and for a while in 1961, the spare tire cover. In Deluxe Corvans and pickups, color-keying of the interior only included the vinyl of the front seat and armrests.

Seat Belt Colors and Part Numbers

This table shows part numbers for seat belts available each year. Seat belts are in P&A manuals, sections P&A 16.714 & 14.875. An article by Rick Loving describing the car seat belt production history appeared in the April 2013 Corsa Communique and has some information pertinent to the FC. Also see the article by Kent Sullivan (CorvanAntics, 2000, Vol 28 #3) describing the 1964 transition in seat belt options for the Greenbrier. See bottom of table for additional information.

All FC (and other corvair) seat belts were made by the Irving Air Chute Company, Lexington, Kentucky, with a polished silver lift-to-release buckle
Factory installed belts: Front belts became a factory optional accessory option (FOA 148) in 1962. FOA 148/RPO A37 and A49 included a rubber boot that coverered the floor mounting hardware and about 8 inches of the belt fabric, and A49 added retractors. A20 lacked boots.
1962 belts: Although FTF:62 says that 985180 was not for Corvair-95, AI:62 and numerous P&A 34 catalogs report that it was.
1963 belts: The belts were made with fabric having three equal sized bands. The belt buckles are stamped "IC 5000", and having a round emblem with a blue "Bowtie" emblem on a white background.
1964 & 65 belts: Kent Sullivan's seat belt history for 1964 describes the transition from the RPO A37 to RPO A49 options for front seat belts. Initially, RPO A37 was replaced by the less expensive RPO A20; but RPO A20 was cancelled (AM:64b) in January '64 when this belt was made standard equipment. In its stead entered RPO A49- a belt with an added retractor (9776227; AM:64c). In late 1964 and 1965, RPO A62 became the delete option for the standard front seat belts, since these were not required in all states.
Dealer installed standard accesssory belts: In 1961, there was no RPO seat belt, although a gray dealer-installed front seat belt was an accessory. Likewise, in later years, seat belts for Greenbrier rear seats and front seat center passenger, as well as Rampside and Corvan front seats, were only available only as dealer installed accessories. These standard belts were all black and did not include rubber boots.
Did Greenbriers receive factory color-keyed seatbelts? Apparently not. Only the standard black seat belts are listed in the 1962 manual, and no part numbers are included in the 1965 manual. Color-keyed seat belts were not part of the Custom Equipment (RPO 431/Z60) package, and the interior illustrations of 1965 Dealer Showroom album (DSA:65) show black belts in both standard and DeLuxe Greenbriers. Technical documents do not show Exception Control Letters for colored seat belts. But if requested, dealers could install the car seat belts in FCs. Like usual, the Parts and Accessory Catalogs are contradictory. For example, some list only black seat belts, P & A 34 Oct 1963 identifies black and fawn belts, and P & A 34 Oct 1962 lists belts in all four interior colors, but for Greenbrier rear seats only (which is excedingly unlikely). By contrast, FTF:63 (pg 45), state that only Greenbrier front seats received color-keyed belts.

Hubcaps and Wheel Covers - Designs and Part Numbers

This table shows inormation about hubcaps and wheel covers available each year. These items are covered in P&A manuals, sections P&A 8.858 & 8.871. Six-digit part numbers were dealer accessory numbers for a set of 4 units; the 7-digit factory part numbers represented a single unit. See bottom of table for additional information.

Hubcaps: All documents (CPS, CIP, DSA, FTF) indicate that white (poverty) hubcaps were factory-installed standard equipment for all Corvair-95s and that chrome hubcaps were included with the DeLuxe RPO 431/Z60 option only for R1206. The chrome hubcaps were available for all models through the Custom Chrome RPO 393/V37 option. Redesign of the hubcaps for 1964 -1965 was reflected with new part numbers.
Wheel Covers: RPO 132/P01 provided factory installed full-size chrome wheel covers, which were also used with other Chevy models, including the Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne. The cost of the Custom Chrome RPO 393/V37 option was discounted (see CIP) when ordered with wheel covers (RPO 132/P01) since the chrome hubcaps were retained by the factory. Wheel covers were also available as a dealer installed accessory. and in 1964 and 1965 a wire wheel cover was also available from the dealer (see P&A, PS:64 and PS:65 and an article here by Dave Newell from CorvanAntics 1982, vol 10:3 pg 19).

1964: An article by Kent Sullivan (Covanatics, 2000, Vol 28 #3) described the 1964 steering wheel options. In this article Kent explains that the standard steering wheels in 1964 were 17 inch diameter, solid white. The Deluxe Corvan/Rampside wheeel was two-tone fawn and white. However, the Deluxe Greenbrier had a 16 inch diameter, color-keyed, "deep dish" wheel (more concave), with a half circle horn-ring. This was the same as the 1963 Monza steering wheel and button.
1965: The standard steering wheel was unchanged from 1964. The steering wheel for the Greenbrier Deluxe was again the flatter 17" Diameter design, but with a full circle horn ring and different button.
